sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United States...and everyone is lined up to buy something with all the money circulating through the system...lol...neat capture. 21 Oct 2008 5:14am Mindy from United StatesNo high falutin' branding, store-naming or sign design for this business. Does it get busine$$? Fun shot? 21 Oct 2008 5:36am @Mindy: i'm not really sure. the space has been occupied by several different businesses over the years though. Nill@ from County Östergötland, SwedenIs it closed? I really want to go in there and take a look! I have always dreamed about shopping in big American stores.... 21 Oct 2008 9:03am @Nill@: thanks nilla. it was closed when i took the photo - too early in the morning. i pass it everyday to and from work, but haven't every been tempted to go in. i'm guessing this particular place isn't the kind you've dreamed about. lisa v from Gawler, AustraliaSuch a huge facade. I'm sure they thought they were being very clever with their sign. I thought it was interesting what Nilla said about always having dreamed of shopping in big american stores. Ours are much like yours except you really do have the monopoly on size. 21 Oct 2008 9:27am @lisa v: i've never been in this one, but i'm guessing nilla would be disappointed. paolo from castelnuovo, Italyi look at that huge sign and I imagine the crowd that enters and exits! 21 Oct 2008 10:56am @paolo: i think the crowd is more like a trickle... Makoto from Sapporo, JapanNobody is there. I like such atmosphere of your images :) 21 Oct 2008 12:12pm daina from New York, United StatesI am amazed at the places you find. They have descriptive generic names like this one i.e. it could stand in for any discount furniture store and therefore it is representative of all. You photographed them all in a sense by photographing this one. And of course it has your signature "emptiness" and wonderful dark shadows. 21 Oct 2008 1:26pm @daina: thanks again for your thoughtful comments daina. don from spokane, United StatesAn interesting store front to capture so well. Wonderful range of tones. Do you use a zone system to decide how you wish to develop the film? Fine work...however you do it! :-) 21 Oct 2008 2:48pm @don: thanks don. my system is less systematic...i pass by the same places and photograph them repeatedly... Howard F. from South Pasadena, Calif., United StatesAmazing, this has to be my first time seeing a furniture store with an empty parking lot. Is the economy getting to them or were you strolling in the morning? Thanks for sharing Grant. 21 Oct 2008 4:47pm @Howard F.: early morning is all howard - i was on my way to work. yiannis krikis from thessaloniki, Greecevery nice imege - I like your style very much 21 Oct 2008 5:19pm Bill from Belton, United StatesI have always been amazed that you rarely see a "crowd" in a large furniture store. Great portrayal, as always! 21 Oct 2008 7:52pm @Bill: i know what you mean - makes you wonder how they stay in business. Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomAre they still in business...... maybe they're waiting for hoards of marauding crowds any minute Very cool shot this one. 21 Oct 2008 8:05pm JJ from Jersey City, United Stateswonderful capture, a sign of the times I guess, well its probably a day when its closed, but could also be a comment that people are worried about the economy and not shopping 21 Oct 2008 11:35pm Rachael from Heber Springs, United StatesIt appears to be empty. The sign looks so many in Arkansas. I was reading through the comments & was surprised stores with names like this surprise people:-) 21 Oct 2008 11:43pm PD from Overland Park, United StatesLove your work, gbe. I also live in OP, KS. What are your favorite places to shoot around town? 22 Oct 2008 1:22am @PD: thanks pd. you have some impressive photos. bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaAlways such an excellent retro feel. The lines...it's all about the lines... 22 Oct 2008 8:15pm dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, CA, United Statesso flat!! it could be a 'Mondrian' or Rothko!! ;) love the faaabulous spread of asphalt! 22 Oct 2008 10:18pm Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesMaybe I'm reading too much into the sign, but it does seem a sign of the times in that the combination of dollar-sign and exclamation mark following "deal" seems to express a certain contempt for the intelligence of those who are likely to shop there. 23 Oct 2008 4:29pm @Twelvebit: i know what what you mean. i try to imagine the meeting in which it was agreed to name the store 'Furniture Deal$!' it's beyond the power of my imagination. |
