Gary from Cochise County, United StatesBy no means would I park there. You got the point across very well. 23 Nov 2008 5:44am Bill from Belton, United StatesI would bet that this sign put a prompt end to to all the illicit vehicles on CHS property! At least i hope so! And by the way Grant, you sounded the alarm with a really great image. The contrast between the dark foreground and background and the white buildings and sign is perfect! 23 Nov 2008 6:42am @Bill: thanks bill. i have a feeling, as i think you've guessed, that this sign is ignored on a daily basis :-) cat from Tel Aviv, IsraelI'm confused...what on earth is CHS? 23 Nov 2008 8:28am @cat: it's a high school for kids who are in trouble, i think. i thought the sign was a bit mean spirited though! kerfendal from Paris, FranceI don't know what is Chs but I appreciate the srong contrasts between the building and the background 23 Nov 2008 8:44am JJ from Jersey City, United StatesI am guessing the C is the name of a town or region and the HS stands for High School, but who knows just what sprung into my mind, another wonderful capture with the whites appearing so bright against he more subdued foreground and background 23 Nov 2008 3:04pm @JJ: thanks jj. it's an alternative high school. but, i can't remember what the c stands for. it's not the town...possibly central... daina from United StatesFor me it is not about what is says but how - the sign itself, the lettering, the location. For me it looks like the cabins in the Catskills but it could be anywhere in the US. The rich lights and darks are terrific. 23 Nov 2008 6:37pm @daina: i appreciate the comment. i understand the curiosity, of course, but really didn't care what the sign says. it's funny your comment about vacation cabins. i think this is a school for delinquents :-) Paul from NetherlandsSuperbe light and sharpness in front! Love the contrast Grant! 23 Nov 2008 8:35pm @Paul: thanks paul eyeswideopened@RAW-Shooter from Germanyvery great perspective! well done framing! 23 Nov 2008 10:03pm Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomGreat shot Grant, including that great afternoon shadow. I like the small scale buildings - a school ? 23 Nov 2008 11:16pm @Observing: thanks mike. yes, it's a high school. the buildings, though, seem to belong to the house next door. Alphons from Kaatsheuvel, NetherlandsGreat shot. I love the humour in it. It is strong in B&W. 23 Nov 2008 11:35pm @Alphons: thanks alphons Mindy from United StatesI taught at two alternative schools in different parts of California. Neither had such grassy areas, cabin-like/garage structures or a cool sign. Cat's mistaken about the italics to communicate American 'friendliness.' More like no real thought behind the type style selection except to make each sentence different. Nicely framed. I agree with what's been said about light and dark. Like the signature 'analog kansas' mood. 23 Nov 2008 11:51pm @Mindy: your comment is very helpful mindy. i couldn't image what could seem friendly about these signs! this photo gives a bit of a distorted view of this place. this is the edge of the parking lot, bordering a small house and these little buildings. i'm afraid the school itself is surrounded by seemingly abandoned businesses and crumbling concrete. don from United StatesThe shot itself is very well done and obviously has considerable provocative content which shows up in the diverse and very interesting comments from viewers. That makes this a fine, very successful post! And, it has the usual fine B&W quality I like about your work. 24 Nov 2008 12:52am @don: thanks very much don lisa v from Gawler, AustraliaYou have a way of making your focal point stand out a mile. I went to an alternative school for a while. It was a bit dungeon like. 24 Nov 2008 4:49am @lisa v: sorry to hear that. this one looks a bit like a prison. sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesLooks to me like a place with a written rule for everything. 24 Nov 2008 5:24am @sherri: seems like it, and rather harsh punishments! Lucca from Cologne, GermanyI especially like the strong contrast and your composition. 24 Nov 2008 10:34pm Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesNice shot. Something very je ne se quoi about it. However, I don't think the sign is particularly mean spirited or friendly: it just strikes me as being rather dumb. Why say "no motor bikes or other vehicles" and not just "No vehicles without permission?" Or even, No Vehicles, since if you have permission, you'd already know it? 25 Nov 2008 4:49am @Twelvebit: it strikes me as the kind of sign that will stay there forever, saying "no" to kids year after year, probably in response to one bad episode. bluechameleon from Vancouver, CanadaThe choice of depth of field really makes one stop and read this. Well done! 26 Nov 2008 1:24pm dj.tigersprout from San Bruno, CA, United Statesi just love all those little huts and 'sheds' in your pics... i imagine a wondrous and intriguing world of hobbits!!! ;) 27 Nov 2008 11:21am @dj.tigersprout: that's an interesting idea. i'm not sure why i like these little buildings so much. |
