Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United StatesFantastic piece of Americana here, Grant. The civil defense siren, the wreath, and of course we couldn't have anyone pulling a 'u-turn' in the midst of all of this traffic. A fabulous capture. 13 Dec 2008 5:07am @Stephen Phillips: thanks stephen. i promise i didn't make any u-turns! martie from US, United StatesInteresting! I thought at first that was a garage, but the more I looked the more I think it's a storage facility. I became curious seeing this and seeing the title, so I looked up Archie, Mo in Wikipedia. Imagine my surprise to learn that it is 1/3 larger than the village near where I live!! Like the processing! 13 Dec 2008 5:30am @martie: you're right martie. at least as far as i can tell, it looks to be part of a complex of storage units. more to come eventually. Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomLovely clean lines on that little building, what is the loudspeaker for..? I like the look of the whole image, even the tangle of wires on the pole :) 13 Dec 2008 5:39am @Observing: thanks mike. the loudspeaker is most likely for warning people of tornadoes. Bill from Belton, United StatesThe sky is amazing here. I like the contrasts and composition of the image. 13 Dec 2008 6:33am Mindy from United StatesWow...a wreath! What a holiday find. Even the power lines are draped like tinsel. 13 Dec 2008 6:43am GJC from Kyoto, JapanTo me, this picture that hangs on that wreath (pun intended) and it's all somehow to me ineffably sad. 13 Dec 2008 6:57am @GJC: i agree on both counts. k@ from Paris, FranceThanks for your comments, Grant ! I agree with the first comment here about the U-Turn ;-) Nice pic & view (exotic for a parisian gal !) See U 13 Dec 2008 8:58am @k@: thanks kat. i'm guessing you're the first person ever to call archie, mo "exotic"! lisa v from Gawler, AustraliaWhat a nice name for a town, Archie..sounds very friendly. 13 Dec 2008 12:01pm Robert from Kingsville, CanadaThe wreath caught my eye right away . Great image. 13 Dec 2008 12:41pm Alphons from Kaatsheuvel, NetherlandsNice is-as-it-is picture. With a fine intiguing composition af shapes and lines. And also the air is very good. 13 Dec 2008 2:42pm ordinaryimages from Kentucky Bluegrass, United Statescould be the volunteer fire department. best...jerry 13 Dec 2008 3:09pm don from United StatesA fine image with your normal, fine quality. I like the wreath as a Christmas addition to the streets. I'm wondering if the siren is used for tornado warnings. 13 Dec 2008 4:08pm @don: thanks don. i think that's exactly what the siren is for. they're tested once a month where i live, but i've never actually seen one. this may be an old model. Chris from Jefferson City, United StatesI used to drive a sales route that included the bustling little town of Archie. I must say you've captured it well! Thanks for the memories. 13 Dec 2008 4:45pm @Chris: thanks chris. my dad sold municipal bonds for e.f. hutton many, many years ago. he traveled all over kansas and missouri, and still seems to have a story for every town, no matter how small. John Maslowski from Dallas,PA, United StatesMain Street? Must be a quiet neighborhood. Great framing and captivating lines. Like the holiday wreath, nice shot. 13 Dec 2008 6:50pm @John Maslowski: thanks john. "quiet" is an understatement, i'm guessing. i only spent a short time here on a saturday afternoon. saw almost no one. Alejandro Caballero from Sant Boi de Llobregat, Barcelona, SpainBuen trabajo como siempre, tienes un estilo unico y gustoso a mi vista, saludos. 13 Dec 2008 8:54pm Gary from Cochise County, United StatesI not only like how stark this is but you have to love the name of the town. 13 Dec 2008 10:53pm @Gary: it's just too good a name! sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesI see they have the standard Christmas decorations up:-) 14 Dec 2008 12:05am taffer from sant boi de llobregat, SpainWow, this seen large and with full detail must be astonishing, this is a tonal festival. 14 Dec 2008 4:59pm yiannis krikis from thessaloniki, GreeceI like this image - it has a very nice framing and tonal range 14 Dec 2008 5:25pm @yiannis krikis: thank you yiannis Denis from A giant black hole filled with lights, TuvaluWhat a busy thaffic downtown! Reminds me of the villages in the North of Finland. 14 Dec 2008 9:42pm Howard F. from South Pasadena, Calif., United StatesThis has to be the cleanest and simplest Main Street ever! WITH siren horn and wreath, too. Small towns in the USA are fantastic places, full of surprises. Nice shot. 15 Dec 2008 5:28am @Howard F.: i thought the same thing about the cleanliness of this place. Twelvebit from Victoria, United StatesWhere I used to live I think the siren was for the volunteer fire department, and it went off everyday at noon. However, when I lived in Oklahoma, where tornadoes did occasionally scare the crap out of me, I did hear a siren warning of a tornado on occasion. I agree with some of the other commenters about the wreath --wouldn't be as good without it. 15 Dec 2008 7:57pm daina from New York, United StatesA utility pole as a stand in x-mas tree - wonderful details all around and I do not find it depressing at all, just a bit of everyday Americana. Wonderful shot. Occasionally I do find the overdone glitzy/garish decorations in upscale suburbia a bit depressing. 16 Dec 2008 1:23am @daina: you have a good point about two versions of christmas decorating. |
