sherri from Little Rock, Arkansas, United StatesExceptional straight on capture. The whole street appears abandoned. 16 Jan 2009 5:19am Bill from Belton, United StatesGreat shot of an industrial area Grant. I like the empty lot in the foreground! 16 Jan 2009 5:39am Matt Sutton from Sydney, AustraliaGrant. You live and photograph in the Twilight Zone !! This has so much happening where do I start? Initially I feel apprehension and that's a great thing 16 Jan 2009 5:55am @Matt Sutton: :-) thanks matt! cat from Tel Aviv, Israelthis building looks like it must have memories of a far grander past. A lot of these pictures remind me of the North West of England, where there are lots of semi ruined grandiose buildings from richer times. Are these cities still functioning, is there still industry here? 16 Jan 2009 6:46am @cat: this building is still in operation - five floors, all of them busy. they make furniture for restaurants. on 12/24 i posted a pic from the basement of this place. @Makoto: thanks makoto GJC from Kyoto, JapanIt's funny what Matt said, because I was thinking something similar -- namely that episode of the last man on earth (and his glasses). Let's hope what happens to his glasses doesn't happen to that wonderful camera of yours! 16 Jan 2009 11:31am @GJC: i don't know the show. but it's a terrible coincidence, i guess - my beloved fuji bit the dust last weekend. i just heard today that it can be repaired - a big relief for me. Robert from Kingsville, CanadaA building from when they had style in their design , photographed by gbe - last man in Kansas. 16 Jan 2009 12:43pm Rachael from Heber Springs, United StatesA solid composition & it shows what the inner city has become. 16 Jan 2009 2:46pm @Rachael: thanks rachael. despite the appearance in this shot, this area is actually thriving. it's a mix of industrial space, like this, and art studios and galleries. kerfendal from Paris, Franceprobably a wide angle lens which gave a special look to this photo something like a studio cinema area, I like this atmosphere 16 Jan 2009 5:09pm @kerfendal: yes. this was taken with my favorite camera. it's a medium format rangefinder with a 60mm lens. that would be about the equivalent of a 40mm lens on a 35mm camera. daina from United StatesMatt and Robert said it well. It does look like the aftermath of something terrible and you were the only one left standing to record it. The empty foreground and seemingly fast moving sky adds to this perception. Wonderfully evocative. 16 Jan 2009 5:37pm Lucca from Cologne, GermanyThe light in this image is very outstanding! Love it! 16 Jan 2009 5:49pm @Lucca: thank you lucca! Stephen Phillips from San Francisco, United StatesOne of your all-time best, grant. Visually stunning. 16 Jan 2009 6:14pm @Stephen Phillips: thanks very much stephen. dogilicious from Millerstown, PA, United StatesI love the way the white on the building really pops. I'm still curious about where all the people are! 16 Jan 2009 9:34pm Chris Parr from Jefferson City, United StatesI don't know if it's the sky or the dark tones, but there's something almost menacing about this shot. Very well done. 16 Jan 2009 10:55pm @Chris Parr: thanks chris Richard_Irwin from Belper, United KingdomThese spaces seem filled with the ghosts of people long before. There is a certain melancholy to the pace and tempo to these shots you show, and they are all so very well constructed. 17 Jan 2009 12:25am @Richard_Irwin: thanks richard. i appreciate your comments. david from columbus, ohio, United Statesthis is exactly the kind of scene that appeals to me; the sort of thing i wanted to see and shoot when i came over to the US 17 Jan 2009 12:38am Observing from West Cheshire, United KingdomThey knew how to design a building back then, is it still in use Grant..? Brilliant shot. 17 Jan 2009 1:23am @Observing: thanks mike - in use and very busy. michele from Canadacan't remember where i was today - but somewhere where i stood there and thought - hmmm Grant would take one here. i almost did too - but then i'm a bit self-conscious about that sort of thing. trying to say though that looking at your images is expanding my eye. with this image i like that dark diagonal that goes 80% through the image and then butts up against the building - feels very satisfying. 17 Jan 2009 4:29am @michele: i'm flattered by your comment michele. i wish you'd taken the shot though. Teresa from Mountain View, United StatesThat entire building in the middle looks like a huge facade. Love the foreground. My first though is you are standing on a roof? The ground looks rather soft. 19 Jan 2009 2:14am @Teresa: the ground was very soft from melting snow. i wasn't on a roof, but i'm hoping to get on the roof of the building in the pic soon - should be an amazing view of the train yard. |
